ARIES Web Portal provides user-friendly NE Crash interface in Indiana.

The Automated Reporting Information Exchange System (ARIES) is a prime example of how our NE Crash can be personalized to meet a client’s needs.

ARIES is a web-based portal that began as an effort by the State of Indiana to increase efficiency and reduce expenditures in maintaining its vehicle crash records system operated by the Indiana State Police (ISP) in accordance with state law.

Indiana now has a nationally recognized collision reporting solution. This solution provides robust paper and electronic report handling capabilities which allow Indiana to maintain a 100% day-current processing environment. The solution also contains robust web portal functionality including imaging, data query, and e-commerce functionality. OPS provides total maintenance, support, and enhancement of the system at no cost to the state. In the recently completed 2008 NHTSA Indiana Traffic Records Assessment, NHTSA states that “the State of Indiana has leaped ahead of the pack in terms of its ability to collect crash data and make the data available to users.” As of this date, 97% of ALL crash reports are submitted electronically to the Indiana State Police.

The original goals of the ARIES project were:

• Provide this service to the State at ZERO cost to the Indiana taxpayer
  
  
• Increase Indiana’s share of federal traffic grant funds by improving the system
  
  
• Improve traffic safety by providing current and accurate crash data to highway safety professionals

These goals have not only been met but have been exceeded.

In these times of drastically reduced State revenues, Indiana has enjoyed these fiscal advantages:

• ISP annual Operational Cost -- $1,000,000 -- has been eliminated from the state budget
  
  
• Free software and technical support provided to 500 police agencies (easily $1-2 million per year savings to local agencies)
  
  
• Free access to both reports and aggregate statistics to INDOT, ICJI, BMV, local MPO’s, etc.
  
  
• Local report revenues protected, usually increased (i.e. Fort Wayne PD; up to $115,000 in 2007 from $80,000 in 2006)
  
  
• Reduced clerical costs to state and local police agencies
  
  
• Increased federal funding to Indiana agencies

Today, ARIES has grown to include not only collision reports and data, but also handgun permits, suspicious activity reports and case reports.

Indiana’s collision reporting success is no secret. In addition to the glowing 2008 NHTSA Indiana Traffic Records Assessment, it has also received:
